On the seventeenth day of Ramadan, in the second year of the noble Prophet’s Hijra, the Great Battle of Badr took place, one of the battles in whi the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) took part with his companions. And it was a victory for Islam and Muslims
This Great Battle was called Badr for it had taken place in a region which was called also Badr, a famous valley located between Mecca and Medina
The Great Battle of Badr, in which Muslims clinched their most decisive victory, and which had effected a fundamental change in Muslim history. Badr carries a great value, as its name is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an. Its markets were one of the most famous Arab markets and one of their ancient centers for trade exchange

The reasons for the battle of Badr, which is the first battle against the polytheists, is that the Quraish used to treat Muslims with cruelty and brutality, so God authorized Muslims to migrate from Makkah to Madinah, but Quraish continued to confiscate Muslims’ money and plunder their property. The Prophet Muhammad – peace and blessing be upon him – knew that a commercial caravan of Quraysh loaded with various goods and provisions would pass near Medina on its way back to Makkah, and he decided to get in the way of the polytheists and attack the caravan to make up for some of the properties unfairly confiscated in Mecca. But Sufyan managed to flee safe with his caravan by taking another route, and he had already sent a messenger to Quraysh asking for help, so the Quraish tribe responded and went out to fight the Muslims
On their arrival, the Muslims descended near the dune “al hanane” in the lower ground, and it was a wide land protected from its three sides, then they moved to another location and built a pergola of palm trees in the same place where Al-Arish Mosque is located nowadays. And the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) spent the night praying and beseeching God to give victory to the believers. God responded to his prayer and filled their hearts with peace , then the fighting between the Muslims and the polytheists began in the morning of the seventeenth of Ramadan
The total number of infidels in the Battle of Badr counted about 1000 fighters, compared to 314 fighters from the Muslim side, and God had supported Muslims with angels, as cited in the verse: “God had given you victory at Badr when you were weak. So fear God, that you may be thankful. When you said to the believers « is it not enough for you that your Lord has reinforced you with three thousand angels, sent down ?
It is, but if you persevere and remain cautious, and they attack you suddenly, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels » The fighting continued until noon that day, and God granted a historic victory to the Muslims after 14 men were martyred, 70 of the polytheists were killed and 70 were captured, and the enemies were defeated and Muslims gained many spoils
This battle has a great importance in Muslim history. in addition to the positive effects it left in the souls of the first Muslims as it boosted their morale, increased their faith, strengthened their community, made Arabs at the time hear of it, and shook the entity of the enemies and they eventually perceived Muslims as a force to be taken seriously
